Pulled Pork Seasoning Guide 

Pulled Pork Seasoning is a delicious blend of herbs and spices that is used on the pork before cooking. This seasoning can be added to the meat in a pot before cooking or rubbed onto the meat prior to cooking. Pulled pork is normally cooked slowly at a low temperature using shoulder of pork. This allows the meat to become very tender.

You can make pulled pork seasoning at home using a variety of herbs and spices of your choice. These could include, chilli powder, ground cumin, ground cayenne pepper, ground paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, dried thyme, ground black pepper and salt. They can be used together or try  different amounts of herbs and spices according to your taste. There are many different recipes to try each bringing a different flavour, so it is good to experiment.

Pulled pork seasoning is readily available online. There are many choices from different brands, each offering their own flavours, so again keep trying until you hit upon the one you really like. These seasonings generally come in a bottle or jar that  can fit into the spice rack in your kitchen.

Pulled Pork Seasoning Cooking Tips

A shoulder cut of pork is usually used to make pulled pork. It is cooked slowly for several hours. Normally it is cooked by using a smoked method. But to cook this at home it is much easier to use a slow cooker. You can also use the oven on a low heat for several hours.

Personally, I like to cook my pulled pork in a slow cooker as the results are absolutely delicious and it is more convenient in our busy lives. You just need to make the seasonings then place the pork in the slow cooker and add the seasoning. Put the slow cooker onto low and leave to cook for 7-8 hours. I like to serve this with some home made coleslaw and some fresh bread with a bit of salad.

Ingredients

3 tablespoons smoked paprika

1 tablespoon ground cumin

1 tablespoon sea salt

2 teaspoons black pepper

2 teaspoons garlic powder

1 teaspoon cayenne pepper powder

1 teaspoon dried thyme

1 onion peeled and cut into quarters

1.5 kg pork shoulder, this needs to cut in half

3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

6 tablespoons of honey

3 tablespoons red wine vinegar 

Method

Take a mixing bowl and add the paprika, cumin, salt, pepper, garlic, cayenne and dried thyme. Blend these together so they are thoroughly mixed. Then add the olive oil, honey and the vinegar.  Give this a good stir until you have a well blended paste.

Now add the onion and then add the pork onto the onion. Take your seasoning paste and pour all of it over the meat.

Set the slow cooker to low, with the lid on and leave to cook for 7-8 hours or until the pork shreds easily.
