Garlic Chives herb (Allium tuberosum)
Garlic Chives Herb has a mild flavour and is very similar in taste to chives and garlic combined. Garlic chives are delicious when added to a salad or can be used as a simple garnish.
This herb is also found in many Asian styles of cooking and is popular in countries like Thailand, China, Japan and Korea. It is often used in dumplings, soups, vegetable dishes and salads. Beware of over cooking these chives as it will result in loss of flavour.
Antibacterial- This plant has antibacterial properties and medical uses as it is packed with vitamins and minerals.
Cancer prevention- It can also help protect against from lung cancer and mouth cancer with the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin. Another great health benefit is it can protect the heart as it helps lower cholesterol and blood pressure.
Vitamins- A, C, E, K, Folates, Niacin, Pantothenic acid, Pyridoxine, Riboflavin, Thiamin
Minerals- Calcium, Iron, Copper, Phosphorous, Magnesium, Manganese, Selenium, Zinc.
Garlic Chives are not so common to buy fresh in the supermarkets but can be found in your local Asian market or store if there is one near you. For many of us there simply are not any Asian stores near us, so the alternative is to grow your own at home.
Growing Garlic Chives at home can be easy to do. The seeds can be planted outside straight into prepared soil or in large pots. They also grow well indoors.They like to be in sun light so bear this in mind when planting out and, if growing indoors pick a nice spot with plenty of light.
This herb is also grown for its ornamental flowers as well as its culinary uses. The plant needs to be left alone if you want it to flower, other wise you need to let the chives grow to at least 6 inches before you harvest them.
When using this herb in cooking I really enjoy the flavours . It adds a subtle garlic and chive flavour to a salad and a lovely green colour.
Here I am going to use the garlic chives in a simple omelette for a great light lunch. That tastes delicious.
Garlic Chives Omelette
Serves 1 person
2 x large free range eggs
3 x tablespoons of Garlic Chives chopped.
1/2 teaspoon soya sauce
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
small pinch of sea salt
small pinch of black pepper
Get a mixing bowl and add the eggs. Give them a good whisk, then add the garlic chives, soya sauce, salt and the pepper. Stir well.
Place a wok or a large frying pan on a high heat adding the oil. Once the pan is hot add the egg mixture, wait for it to cook a little then swirl the pan around to make sure the omelette is even.
Cook this until the edges are set and you are able to flip the omelette over then cook for a further minute.
