French Seasonings Guide

French Seasonings are usually a blend of the classic herbs that you would find in French cooking. One of the most recognised and widely used French seasoning is Herbs De Provence which is generally a blend of Thyme, Tarragon, Basil, Rosemary and Lavender.  Other herbs can be used depending on which recipe you use and your taste.

This seasoning blend is pretty simple to make as long as you have all the herbs at home. You will need a pestle and mortar or a small to medium mixing bowl, which ever you prefer to use. I will also be showing you in the recipe below how to make Herbs De Provence.

Of course, if you do not have the time or simply don’t want to make this blend of herbs you can buy these seasonings pre mixed. Coming quite often in a bottle that makes storage handy.

French Seasonings Cooking Tips

These blends of seasonings are particularly good as they are very versatile and can be used with a wide variety of meats. They are often used with stews, and also when grilling or roasting meat. Another tasty use for this seasoning is to add it to vegetables which are being sautéd.  This brings out a great flavour.

If you have time, then roasting meats with this seasoning blend is delicious. Sadly, because of our busy lives, many of us do not have the time any more. What I like to do with these herbs is to use them when stewing meats, which is also just as delicious. This can be done using traditional methods or, as I prefer, by cooking them in the slow cooker. This not only saves time but the meats come out of it so tender.

Pork Provençal in a Slow Cooker

Herbs De Provence seasoning

Recipe

1 tablespoon onion powder

1 tablespoon garlic powder

1 tablespoon dried rosemary

1 tablespoon dried basil

2 teaspoons sea salt

2 teaspoons  fresh ground black pepper

2 teaspoons dried oregano

2 teaspoons dried thyme

1 teaspoon marjoram

Pork Provencal in a Slow Cooker

Recipe

4 x large pork chops with the bone

400 gram tin of chopped tomatoes

1 red pepper cut into chunks

1 yellow pepper cut into chunks

1 tablespoon tomato puree

Method

Place the pork chops into the slow cooker with the red and yellow peppers. 

Mix all the seasonings together using a pestle and mortar give it a good grind or lightly blend or simply mix together in a bowl if have neither.

Then place the chopped tomatoes into a medium to large mixing bowl and add the seasoning blend and the tomato puree, now mix together.

Once mixed pour into the slow cooker covering the pork chops. Place the lid on and cook on low for 8 hours or on high for 4 hours.
