Chilli Powder Seasoning Guide

Chilli Powder Seasoning is a combination of powdered dried chilli mixed with other spices. A great misconception is that chilli powder is the same as cayenne pepper. Trust me, this could not be further from the truth. Cayenne pepper is dried chilli ground into a spicy powder which really packs a punch,

Whereas chilli powder seasoning is a blend of chilli’s and other ingredients such as cumin, paprika, oregano and garlic powder. Chilli powder seasoning has a totally different roll in cooking and does not deliver the same amount of spicy heat as cayenne pepper. It is actually a seasoning blend and adds great chilli flavour to your cooking.

Chilli Powder Recipe

Ground Paprika - 2 tablespoons

Dried Oregano - 2 teaspoons

Ground Cumin - 1 teaspoon

Ground Cayenne pepper - 1 teaspoon

Garlic Powder - 1 teaspoon

Onion Powder - 1/2 teaspoon

Salt - 1/2 teaspoon

Take a small to medium mixing bowl and add all the ingredients and thoroughly mix together!

Buying chilli powder is easy as it is in plentiful supply and can be found online with several brands to choose from. If you need your chilli powder instantly  but don’t have any in the pantry, then you can make your own.

Chilli Powder Seasoning Cooking Tips

The first and most important cooking tip as previously mentioned is, do not get confused with the myth that chilli powder and cayenne pepper are the same. They are most definitely not!

If you are going to cook a dish and you are looking for a chilli flavour with some spicy heat then chilli powder is definitely the seasoning blend to use. A classic example is, when making a chilli con carne, use chilli powder to give it a lovely chilli flavour.

So a good rule to go by is, if you want a chilli flavour which, of course, carries a warmth of spice, then chilli powder is the blend to use. If you are looking for a spicy fiery, heat then powdered cayenne pepper is the spice to use.

1 x large onion diced

3 x large cloves garlic chopped fine

2 x cayenne peppers chopped fine

1 x 400 gram tin chopped tomatoes

1 x tin red kidney beans

2 x tablespoons tomato puree

2 x tablespoons chilli powder

1 x tablespoon ground cumin

1 x tablespoon ground coriander seeds

1 x fresh lime

small bunch fresh cilantro

salt and pepper

Take your slow cooker and add the chopped onions, garlic and chilli's, then add the chicken breasts.

Take a medium to large bowl and add the tomatoes and tomato puree and give a stir, now add the chilli powder, cumin and ground coriander seeds and mix together, once mixed add the contents to the slow cooker with a teaspoon of salt and of black pepper.

Now add the kidney beans into the slow cooker and give the lot a good stir making sure the chicken is nicely coated.

Place the lid on the cooker and for best results set to low and leave for 8 hours, you can set to high and cook for 4 hours.

Once cooked add the juice from the lime. Chop fine the cilantro and add this to the chilli con carne. Then using 2 forks pull the chicken meat apart and give a good stir, taste it and if it needs more salt and pepper then add to taste.

Plate the rice and serve.
